UMW Spirit

March 31st, 2011

This picture was taken in Framar’s attempt to win a PS3. Sodexho was having a photo competition of a group with the most school spirit. We thought this was a competition within Mary Washington and therefore we would have a good chance of winning. On Friday Night Dry we knew the ‘Eagle’ was going to be there and we thought we would get a picture with it sporting our UMW wear and painting our faces. I thought this was a pretty UMW spirit filled picture.. maybe even UMW website worthy??? Yes? But we were only really in it for the PS3, which we didn’t win because turns out it wasn’t a competition within UMW. If they attached a prize to Spirit Week, Framar would have been there front and center!

UMW– STILL getting on the bus

February 17th, 2011

The first picture is of current UMW students who live in Framar now that it is the International Living Center, mimicking the second picture of when Mary Washington was an all white girls school taken February 28, 1964. I believe that the purpose of the Freedom Rides Bus exhibit is to inspire students with the message that great change can come from a few small steps taken by courageous people, even if it means we have to step out alone. What I see is UMW still trying to get on the bus, but at least they are trying. The bus exhibit was a flashy way to show this effort, but I still appreciate it, and I know many other people do as well. UMW used to be an all white girls school, and if they didn’t change then I wouldn’t be here today, and I wouldn’t have met some of my best friends.

Look how we made this picture so diverse! Josh in the back is a Psychology major, he likes to watch Bones, and he’s a boy! Anna pouring sugar, is an officer in Eco Club and she is the sweetest person you will ever meet! Janet, standing next to Anna, just returned from studying abroad in Chile and she rides horses. Dawn says she thinks she has some Native American descent, but more than that she likes to sing and is active in Young Dems, she also has the coolest sense of style. There’s me, pouring the kettle, I’m half Nepali and half Korean but born and raised in Northern Virginia, I have antisocial tendencies and I love board games. And then there’s Jeff reading the paper… he’s just weird. So there it is, look how far UMW has come in relation to what it used to be.

What defines Mary Washington?

January 27th, 2011

I’m a senior at Mary Washington now, and in all my years as a student here I have seen so many new people in administration. I’m not only speaking of the obvious multiple changes in Presidents, but also directors of academic departments. As a student leader having to report to many different admins, it is frustrating when they keep changing because it disrupts the flow of things. Many times I think that if I didn’t know anything about UMW’s history, I would mistake it for being a brand new university, not quite having everything figured out yet. A university that is run by the students, but the power of decision making lies in the hands of administration. That is why I used this new person name tag, who is to know who will be the next to come and go?

Picture Describing Me

January 13th, 2011

My parents┬ádefine me more than anything. I’m 21 years old now and every day I see more of my parents in me… their bad habits, compulsive habits, mannerisms, interests. I live every day trying to avoid becoming them, so even indirectly they influence what I do and who I am.
